Mendota Heights Police Department, MN July 30, 2014 Police Officer Scott Patrick, 47, was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop in West St. Paul. Patrick is the first Mendota Heights police officer to be slain in the line of duty. He leaves behind a wife and two teenage children. Mendota Heights Police Chief Mike Aschenbrenner said Patrick had been on the force since 1995.

Waldwick Police Department, NJ July 17, 2014 Police Officer Chris Goodell, 32, was killed when his patrol car was struck by a tractor trailer on Route 17, near Bergen Avenue, shortly before 1:30 am. Goodell was a five-year veteran of the force, a former Marine, and a graduate of Waldwick High School. He was engaged to be married.

Jersey City Police Department, NJ July 13, 2014 Police Officer Melvin Santiago, 23, was shot and killed while responding to a report of an armed robbery. Santiago and another officer responded to the Walgreens store at Communipaw Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard and were the first officers to arrive at the scene. The gunman opened fire on the marked police car. Officer Santiago had graduated from the academy only six months prior to the incident. He is survived by his mother and stepfather.

Operation Enduring Freedom August 5, 2014 Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene, 55, of Schenectady, New York, died Aug. 5, at Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul City, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered by small arms fire in an insider attack. Greene became the first U.S. general officer killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was serving as the Deputy Commanding General Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan.

Operation Enduring Freedom August 3, 2014 Staff Sgt. Girard D. Gass Jr., of Lumber Bridge, North Carolina, died Aug. 3, in Jalalabad Air Field Hospital, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related incident while on patrol that occurred in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina

Glendale Fire Department, KY August 6, 2014 Firefighter Jonathan French, 25, was killed and another Firefighter, Lisa French, was injured when a semi tractor-trailer struck them and their fire apparatus while they were operating at the scene of a motor vehicle fire on Interstate 65. According to reports, Firefighter Lisa French, Jonathan’s mother, was flown to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Operation Enduring Freedom July 24, 2014 Pfc. Keith M. Williams, 19, of Visalia, CA, died July 24, in Mirugol Kalay, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when the enemy attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Williams was assigned to 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, CO. Staff Sgt. Benjamin G. Prange, 30, of Hickman, NE, was also killed.

New Carlisle Fire Department, IN August 5, 2014 Assistant Fire Chief Middlebrook, 41, died from injuries sustained when the roof of a burning commercial storage building collapsed on him and another firefighter. According to reports, the other firefighter sustained a broken ankle and minor burns.

Indian Peaks Fire Protection, CO July 9, 2014 Firefighter Marchman collapsed and died from an apparent heart attack in the Brainard Lake Recreational Area while hiking back out to the Blue Lake/Mitchell Lake Trailhead parking lot after he and fellow responders helped rescue an injured hiker and move her to a suitable location for transport by a Flight for Life helicopter to the Good Samaritan Hospital

Sergeant Renfro had served with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office for 15 years. He is survived by his wife and four children. Patrolman Nissen had served in law enforcement for 27 years, having served with the Stone Park Police Department and Northlake Police Department. He is survived by his daughter and four brothers. The subject was also shot and killed by return fire. Trooper Casper had graduated from the police academy only three months prior to the incident and was on his first shift after being cut loose from field training.
